Take a Bow, Tyee Friends. You Made a Big Difference Again

Twenty-two years in, you’d think things might settle into a predictable rhythm. Not so at The Tyee. Our 2025 was anything but calm: a snap federal election kept our reporting team sprinting for weeks, and much of the year was spent tracking unprecedented provocations aimed at Canada from our neighbours to the south.

At a moment when newsrooms across the country are shrinking, we welcomed new talent to our editorial and operations teams, including our first-ever chief operating officer .

At a time when culture writing is getting squeezed out of shrinking newsrooms, we grew our coverage through the Weekender culture section.

And while our roots stay firmly planted in B.C., we showed up in more places than ever, with our Alberta coverage holding the provincial government and its separatist wing to account.

Readers noticed, and you responded. This year we cleared a milestone we’d been working toward for a long time: The Tyee is now officially a registered journalism organization. That means we can issue tax receipts to our Tyee Builders, and it’s part of the reason our membership climbed past 11,000 individuals in 2025.

The short answer, as always, is you. Our Tyee Builders program, where readers chip in whatever amount works for them, remains the engine of our growth.

We don’t rely on Builders alone. Our mixed model also draws on private donations, grants and government support that flows through programs built specifically to sustain Canadian journalism.*

But reader support is what lets us say yes to more coverage, more staff and more experiments in how we tell stories.

Because you’ve chosen to partner with us this way, we think it’s only fair to show our work. You’ll find the full picture in our 2025 Impact Report, available to read now .

Some highlights: The Tyee published 1,386 articles in 2025. We netted 12,593,812 page views and 4,852,298 site visitors.

In 2025 alone, 11,310 people supported The Tyee through our Tyee Builders program.

The 2025 Impact Report also features behind-the-scenes profiles of the journalists behind our biggest stories this year; a look inside the Spotlight: Child Welfare collaborative journalism project, which we are proud to host; and real examples of Tyee reporting that made an impact on issues from tenant protections to library funding.

If you’re already a Tyee Builder, thank you. You made this year possible.

If you’re a regular reader who hasn’t joined yet, consider signing up for an amount that works for you.
