Thanksgiving in Calgary: What's open and closed | Events and activities

Thanksgiving will be celebrated Oct. 12 this year, and Calgary is expecting to see snow over the weekend, but sun for the holiday Monday.

The day is recognized as a stat holiday across Canada, so some city services and businesses will be operating with adjusted hours for the holiday.

However, there will still be plenty of events across the city to celebrate and give thanks, as well as in preparation for Halloween.

Calgary Transit: Buses, CTrains and On Demand will operate on a Sunday level of service on Thanksgiving Monday. The Calgary Transit call centre will be open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the customer service centre will be closed.

The Red Line will be closed between Chinook and Heritage stations starting on Saturday, Oct.10, until the early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 13. Read here for information on how to get around the city during CTrain disruptions.

Calgary Public Library: All Calgary library locations will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Landfills: All City of Calgary landfills will be open on Thanksgiving.

Parking: On-street parking in all ParkPlus zones will be free on Monday. The Calgary Parking contact centre and customer service centre will be closed on the holiday. Weekend rates apply at Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots.

Leisure centres: Glenmore, Inglewood and Thornhill leisure centres will be open from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. for free public swimming. All other City of Calgary leisure centres will be closed for the holiday.

Canada Post: There will be no collection or delivery of mail on Thanksgiving. Post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.

Malls: CF Chinook Centre and CF Market mall will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Sunridge Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Southcentre Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and The Core will be open 12 to 5 p.m.

Attractions: Telus Spark Science Centre will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and the Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute will be open with regular hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Heritage Park’s Historical Village will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Thanksgiving Monday.
