President Donald Trump hit back at New York Governor Kathy Hochul after she said her state wouldn’t use “Lake America,” the administration’s new name for Lake Ontario.
Trump belittled the Democratic governor in a social media post Friday, claiming that Canada has been taking economic advantage of Hochul as well as New York state. He repeated his charge that the US’s northern neighbor “has been ripping us off for decades on Trade and Tariffs.”
Hochul “allows other Countries and States to take advantage of New York, which gets treated like “garbage,’” he said. Trump urged voters to back Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman.
Trump on Thursday signed a directive changing the name of the lake and saying it was “effective immediately,” escalating a trade fight between the US and Canada.
“New York won’t be calling it that,” Hochul said in a social media post in response.
