Blue Jays’ Ricky Tiedemann fans two in long-awaited MLB debut

The Toronto Blue Jays left-hander made his MLB debut Saturday against the New York Yankees, coughing up one run over 1.2 innings while recording his first two strikeouts.

After allowing a lead-off single to Spencer Jones in the second inning, Tiedemann induced an infield popout from Jazz Chisholm. But Yankees rookie George Lombard Jr. then ripped an RBI single to right field, cashing the run after Jones stole second. Tiedemann escaped the jam with a flyout by Ryan McMahon and a punchout of Austin Wells.

Tiedemann returned for the third inning, getting Trent Grisham to fly out to centre and striking out Ben Rice.

Tiedemann, 23, was once the Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, but injuries have derailed his development in recent seasons.

He went under the knife for Tommy John surgery in 2024, missed the entire 2025 season and then was slow to build up this season due to elbow soreness. He was activated from the minor-league IL on Aug. 5 and has made three relief appearances for triple-A Buffalo in the week since, allowing four runs and five hits with four strikeouts.

"It’s big," Tiedemann said Saturday of his first MLB call-up. "I mean, not only for me, but for everybody that sacrificed anything for me growing up and getting me to games; my family, my parents. So it's big for all of us."
