NHL announces consolidation of Winnipeg Jets’ history
The statistical history of the Jets will now include the team's first stint in Winnipeg (1979-96), as well as their years as the Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011) and their current run in the Manitoba capital, the NHL announced Thursday.
The statistical history of the inactive Coyotes franchise will include only its years in Arizona (1996-2024) and will not be included in the Jets' history.
The original Jets moved to Arizona in 1996. That franchise is now in Utah.
“Statistics and records are more than numbers — they capture the milestones, achievements and memories that define the history of our game and the communities that support it,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement issued by the league. “We respect the Jets’ commitment to honouring their franchise’s journey and are pleased that the full history of NHL hockey in Winnipeg now can be celebrated as one continuous story.”
The consolidation of the Jets’ history results in changes to several franchise records, including new career leaders in goals (Dale Hawerchuk, 379), assists (Thomas Steen, 553) and points (Hawerchuk, 929). Current Jets forward Mark Scheifele (372 goals, 535 assists, 907 points), who previously was the franchise leader in goals and points and ranked second in assists, will have the chance to surpass all three marks in 2026-27.
“Today’s announcement is meaningful for our organization, our alumni and generations of Winnipeg Jets fans,” Jets owner Mark Chipman said in the league statement. “The Jets teams from 1979 to 1996 helped build the identity and tradition that we proudly carry forward today. For our fans, these players and these moments always have been part of the same Winnipeg Jets story, and we’re pleased that our official records now will reflect that.”
