Reports: Mets’ Robert Jr., Royals’ Schreiber placed on outright waivers

The New York Mets are making Luis Robert Jr. available to the rest of the league.

New York has placed the 29-year-old outfielder on outright waivers, giving any interested teams the chance to claim him and assume the remainder of his 2026 salary, according to a report from MLB.com's Anthony DiComo on Saturday.

There is a little more than $5 million guaranteed on Robert's contract this season.

Any interested teams will have 48 hours to claim Robert's services. If he were to be claimed in the coming days, the six-foot-two Cuban would be eligible to play in the post-season.

The move comes shortly after the Cincinnati Reds placed veterans Eugenio Suárez and TJ Friedl on waivers, both of whom were not claimed, as non-contending clubs look to shed salary down the stretch.

Robert landed with the Mets in an off-season trade with the Chicago White Sox, but he has battled injuries and inconsistency in what has amounted to a disappointing campaign in Queens.

Over 56 games, the seven-year MLB veteran is slashing .229/.310/.410 with 10 homers and two stolen bases.

Despite the tempered season-long line, Robert has shown some life as of late, hitting six home runs and carrying a 1.015 OPS over his last 17 games.

Robert, who has a $20-million option on his contract for 2027, was one of the most exciting young players in baseball when he made the jump to the majors with the White Sox in 2020, but injuries limited him from consistently performing at an all-star level.

His best season came in 2023, when he earned a spot on the American League squad at the Midsummer Classic, hit 38 homers and carried an .857 OPS on his way to a Silver Slugger award.
