Report: Arizona State investigating Blues prospect’s collapse after workout

Arizona State University is investigating the circumstances around Matthew Mayich's collapse last Thursday.

The University is looking into a workout that led to Mayich's collapse and subsequent hospitalization, according to a report from The Athletic 's Kate Strand and Jeremy Rutherford on Tuesday.

Mayich, 21, is a defenceman on the Arizona State hockey team and was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues .

“A student-athlete who collapsed during an outdoor exercise Thursday morning remains hospitalized,” ASU vice president of media relations Chris Fiscus told The Athletic . “The student-athlete, a member of the ASU hockey team, is not being named by the university because of privacy interests. The university is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout.”

Fiscus did not say whether the workout was sanctioned by the ASU hockey team.

Per The Athletic 's report, "Tempe Fire Medical Rescue sent crews to 400 S. Rural Road, the address for Sun Angel Stadium, at 8:31 a.m. Thursday, after receiving a report of a 'heat-related illness.' A patient was treated there and transported to a nearby hospital, the fire department said."

He spent his freshman season at Clarkson University in 2025-26, scoring seven goals and 15 points in 34 games.

Mayich announced at the end of the season that he would be transferring to Arizona State for 2026-27.
