Man, 25, facing assault charges after bagpiper injured on Wellington Street

A 25-year-old man is facing several charges, including assault with a weapon, after a bagpiper was injured in an altercation Saturday on Wellington Street.

The victim was playing the bagpipes on a Wellington sidewalk near Sussex Drive just after 4 p.m. on May 15 when a man, without being provoked, assaulted him with an edged weapon, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release on May 17.

According to police, the suspect left the scene but was quickly found and arrested.

The victim suffered minor injuries to a hand and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

In addition to the assault with a weapon charge, Jean Dorestant has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon, obstruct/resist arrest and two counts of breaching probation.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information or video surveillance footage related to the incident was asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service Central Investigations Section at 613-236-1222, extension 5166.
