Sudan lifts two-year curfew in Khartoum amid ongoing conflict

For more than three years, war has disrupted daily life in Sudan.

In Khartoum, residents have faced strict movement restrictions and a curfew since May 2024 as fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces intensified.

People and private vehicles were previously barred from moving between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., while commercial transport faced restrictions from 10:00 p.m.

The measures have now been lifted as authorities seek to restore normal life in the capital.

For many residents, the change offers a chance to rebuild livelihoods and regain some of the freedoms lost during the conflict.

"The restrictions were understandable at the time, but people now need more freedom to work later, earn a living, and gradually return to normal life as it was before the war," said Ayman Alzain, a resident of Khartoum.

Residents returning to the capital have also welcomed the move, saying improved security is allowing communities to restart economic activities.

"I'm happy that this step has finally been taken.

The situation is safer now, and people need to feel even more secure so they can work and support their livelihoods," according to Hanaa Alhaj, a returnee resident.

Despite the easing of restrictions, security measures remain in place, with checkpoints and patrols still operating in parts of the capital, particularly around bridges and strategic locations.

Analysts say the gradual reopening reflects authorities' confidence in improving security conditions while balancing the need to protect the city's fragile recovery.

"It will help people earn a living and support the revival of small businesses and local economic activity," said Mohamed Elnayer, an analyst.

As Khartoum slowly reopens, residents hope the changes mark the beginning of a broader recovery after years of conflict and disruption.
