Seoul photo exhibition honors 13 Korean 'comfort women'

The war ended in 1945, but for 13 Korean "comfort women" who were forcibly taken to China by the Japanese military, the ordeal did not end with the war.

Unable to return home after liberation, they spent the rest of their lives in exile in China, living under assumed names and facing poverty, illness and isolation.

A new photo exhibition in Seoul, "Names Engraved in the Backroads," brings their lives and identities back into focus through personal belongings, documents and portraits photographed over more than two decades by photographer Ahn Se-hong.

"Behind the words 'comfort women' were real people—our neighbors, sisters, and mothers.
