Gyirong Port: Gateway within a deeply incised river valley

The Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has suffered heavy damage from a recent mudslide, bringing renewed attention to the geography behind one of the most important China-Nepal land routes.

Located in Gyirong County, Xigaze, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, the port is only about 130 kilometers by road from Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.

For decades, it has served as a major channel for trade, travel and exchanges between China and Nepal.

Why Gyirong? The importance of Gyirong begins with its geography.

The Gyirong Valley provides a relatively low-elevation and continuous passage from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau toward South Asia.

It stretches from around 4,200 meters near Zongga Township to about 1,800 meters at Resuo Village, with an elevation drop of nearly 2,400 meters over roughly 93 kilometers.

Along the China-Nepal border, where high mountains and deep valleys dominate the landscape, relatively flat areas suitable for roads, border facilities and long-term operations are limited.

Dai Zili, deputy secretary-general of the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction, said the port's location in a river valley provides relatively flat terrain and a comparatively low elevation, making prolonged work and residence more manageable than at higher elevations.

But geography is not the only factor.

The valley has also formed part of a long-established route linking the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau with South Asia.

From historic route to international gateway Gyirong's importance has grown alongside China-Nepal trade.

The bilateral port opened in December 2014 and was upgraded to an international port in 2017, allowing travelers from third countries to pass through.

In March 2022, the Gyirong Border Economic Cooperation Zone was approved, becoming China's 18th national-level border economic cooperation zone and the first of its kind in Xizang.
