Barrier lake above mudslide-hit Xizang port fully drained

The barrier lake formed during the mudslide disaster in Gyirong County of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has fully drained and is now under control, local authorities said on Tuesday.

According to the emergency rescue headquarters for the August 26 disaster, earlier radar surveys showed the lake covered an area of about 0.1 square kilometers and had an estimated water storage volume of roughly 2.2 million cubic meters.

The barrier dam body was estimated to have an average height of 60 meters and a length of about 1,100 meters.

Rescue and monitoring teams maintained round-the-clock observation through lookout posts, video surveillance systems and slope monitoring radar, tracking inflow volumes and deformation of the dam body.

Based on the latest expert evaluation, authorities determined that the barrier lake had completely drained and that associated risks are controllable.
