Thara R., co-founder and psychiatrist, Schizophrenia Research Foundation, Chennai

I was born in Chennai and have spent almost my entire life here. My earliest memories are of a very different Madras — quiet roads, broad pavements, tree-lined streets, and spacious homes. Early mornings brought milk and newspaper deliveries, temple music during Margazhi, and MGR songs from loudspeakers.

The Marina Beach was another favourite. It was quieter and cleaner then, and later became part of my routine through morning walks with my dogs and familiar faces along the shore.

December meant the music season. As a busy doctor, concerts offered a much-needed break, while sabha canteens, filter coffee, and conversations became part of the experience.

Chennai has also been deeply welcoming to me as a doctor. I have always valued the trust patients and families place in doctors as well as the city’s interest in healthcare.

I have watched the city become busier and more crowded, with traffic, pollution, heat and changing ways of life. Yet, its warmth and goodness remain.

I have travelled widely, but Chennai has always been where I belong. Its streets hold memories of growing up, friendships, medicine, and every stage of my life.
