Collector R. Revathi on Wednesday said that judicious use of water was the need of the hour in delta region.

Addressing World Coconut Day celebration organised by the East Coast Coconut Farmers Association at Peravurani on Wednesday (September 2). she said water audit had assumed importance in view of the current situation experienced by delta farmers. Efforts had been initiated to make water preservation and its judicious use as a mass movement and farmers must use the available water economically during the ongoing cultivation season.

Urging the coconut farmers to opt for fodder intercropping at their groves as the requirement of fodder might increase due to El Nino effect, she said block-level committees had been formed to assist coconut and other crop cultivators to manufacture value-added products with assistance from NIFTEM-T.

Later in the day, the Collector visited the Thanjavur Coconut Marketing Complex, Pattukottai, located at Ponnavarayankadu and inspected the oil extraction units, coconut parasite breeding centre and other facilities.. The 20-acre complex was established in 2011 at a cost of ₹8 crore and another ₹5.20 crore was spent on renovation in 2022.
