GVMC chief reviews water supply, sewerage, street vending zones

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ketan Garg undertook a day-long, extensive field inspection across Madhurawada, North and Aganampudi Zones to inspect development activities and ongoing projects, on Sunday.

As part of the 24x7 Water Supply Project being implemented in the city’s north-west sector with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Commissioner visited households in Ambedkar Colony in Ward No. 51 of the North Zone and inspected water supply arrangements. He interacted with families having 24x7 water supply connections and enquired about the continuity and quality of water supply and their level of satisfaction.

Of the targeted 40,000 connections under the 24x7 Water Supply Project, 28,000 connections have so far been completed, he said, directing representatives of the executing agency to complete the remaining connections by the end of September.

The Commissioner inspected the major water supply pipeline works being undertaken at a cost of ₹116.40 crore with the 15th Finance Commission funds, including the transmission of treated water from the 85 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Aganampudi to the Anakapalli Head Water Works, as well as the pipeline from Aganampudi to Narava. He directed representatives of M/s KLSR Infratech to complete the remaining works within 45 days so that water supply to the respective areas could be improved.

He inspected the proposed STP site at Kapuluppada as part of the ₹658.61-crore Comprehensive Sewerage Project aimed at developing a comprehensive and modern sewerage system in the Madhurawada area. The Commissioner directed officials to take up the planned development of a 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) over the identified 30-acre site at Kapuluppada, along with a green belt, compound wall, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste facilities, TTP and other associated facilities. Mr. Garg instructed representatives of Zigma to immediately expedite the removal of legacy waste from the biomining area.

The Commissioner also inspected the ongoing construction works of the Smart Street Vending Zone at Duvvada, being developed by the GVMC to improve the living standards of street vendors and provide them with an organised and safe environment to conduct their businesses.
