Minister for Higher Education P. Viswanathan, along with District Collector Nishant Krishna, inaugurated five newly constructed anganwadi centre buildings in the Melur municipal area on Monday.

Constructed at a total cost of ₹90 lakh—with an allocation of ₹18 lakh per centre—the project was funded under the State Finance Commission Grant (Operation & Maintenance, Infrastructure) for the 2025–26 fiscal year through the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

Emphasising the critical role of early childhood development in a child’s physical health and brain growth, officials noted that anganwadi centres served as vital lifelines.

Beyond providing essential nutrition and supplementary meals to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and adolescent girls, these facilities monitor children’s height and weight to curb malnutrition, promote maternal-child vaccination awareness, and introduce three-to-six-year-olds to play-based learning models.

The five newly built centres are located across the Melur Municipality at Vellanathampatti, Market Road, Anna Colony, Malampatty and Kalaignar Nagar.

To ensure a safe, engaging, and healthy environment for children and women, each unit has been equipped with modern infrastructure, including proper ventilation, safe drinking water, dedicated restroom facilities, and fully functional kitchens, said officials.
