With the El Nino posing challenges to Telangana through shortfall in monsoon rains and major reservoirs going dry, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy wants the film fraternity to step beyond the screen and help prepare people for difficult times ahead.

Appealing to film stars and other influential personalities in society to join the government’s awareness efforts, Mr. Reddy said their connection with the public could help communicate the importance of conserving water and using electricity judiciously. Their appeals, he felt, could supplement the government’s efforts to prepare people for possible water scarcity and power shortages.

The Chief Minister cited actor Vijay Deverakonda’s appeal to people about the difficulties that could arise from El Nino and called upon other members of the film industry to follow suit. He said creating awareness about the potential challenges was a social responsibility that celebrities should embrace.

The idea, according to Mr. Reddy, is to keep people informed about the possible impact of El Nino on a regular basis rather than wait until shortages become acute. Sustained communication could encourage households, businesses and other consumers to avoid wastage and make conservation part of their everyday lives.

Addressing a press conference on the impact of El Nino on the State, the Chief Minister also sought a larger role for the media in educating people. Newspapers should carry more articles explaining the need for prudent use of water and power, while television news channels should focus on stories that convey the importance of conservation, he said.

The appeal reflects an attempt to take the message beyond government departments and official advisories by involving public figures who command considerable attention and influence. Film stars, in particular, could help make conservation messages more accessible to audiences across different sections of society.

Mr. Reddy maintained that preparing people for the challenges ahead was not the government’s responsibility alone. Every section of society, including celebrities and the media, had a role in keeping the public alert and encouraging responsible consumption.
