The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search and seizure operation at a jewellery establishment in Lashkar Mohalla in Mysuru on September 16 and seized around 430 grams of gold ornaments that did not bear the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) markings.
According to an official statement, the operation was conducted at Pratibha Jewels as part of BIS’s enforcement activities against the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and violations of hallmarking regulations.
The absence of HUID markings constituted a violation of the provisions and regulations under the BIS Act, 2016. Based on the findings, legal proceedings under the Act are being initiated against the concerned party, the statement said.
BIS said it conducts search and seizure operations based on credible inputs regarding the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and violations of hallmarking regulations. Such enforcement measures are aimed at protecting consumer interests, preventing deceptive trade practices and curbing the circulation of substandard and counterfeit products, it said.
Consumers have been advised to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery through the BIS Care App and report suspicious or non-compliant products. Further information is available on the BIS website.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Scientist-E and Director P. Jayachandra Babu and comprised Scientist-C and Deputy Director Manish Raj, Scientist-B and Assistant Director Piyush Kumar Gupta, and other BIS personnel.
