Seeking to ensure stricter compliance, state-owned Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL) Thursday launched an artificial intelligence-powered pilot project for cylinder hydrotesting verification in ten of their retail CNG stations.

The technology entails station cameras capturing vehicle registration numbers, which would then be processed through an AI-application to assess the hydrotest status of the vehicle’s CNG cylinder. The application would be linked to the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation’s (PESO) portal.

Elaborating about the way forward with the pilot, Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial) at IGL, stated, “Moving forward, IGL plans to evaluate the pilot project for potential expansion and explore broader integration of certification records with vehicle databases in consultation with regulatory stakeholders.”

Government regulations require CNG cylinder to undergo the testing once in every three years at a PESO-approved testing centre.

IGL had informed early-September that it would not dispense CNG to vehicles without a valid hydro-test certificate.
