Villagers of Kottapalayam in Vavipalayam Panchayat in Tiruppur say they are resisting attempts by the district administration to identify a dumping site in the village.

“We will not allow the authorities to pollute soil and water in the village where agriculture is the mainstay for livelihood,” Parthasarathy, former president of the village panchayat and State Deputy General Secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Movement said.

A number of beneficiaries of the Bhoodan Movement are utilising their landholdings for survival in the village where fields are irrigated by the PAP Main Canal.

The villagers who had thwarted such a move by the district administration before the TVK Government took over have asserted that their resolve to safeguard their agricultural land has only been strengthened.

Warning of protests, the villagers said they would take the support of farmers’ associations and political parties to prevent pollution of soil, air and water.
