Bulk waste generators in Madurai asked to register themselves within 15 days

The Madurai Corporation has asked bulk waste generators (BWGs) like commercial establishments, residents welfare associations, hotels/lodges, hospitals, educational institutions, marriage halls and markets to mandatorily register themselves under the Solid Waste Management Rules - 2026.

In a statement, Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar said buildings with a built-up area of 20,000 square metres and above, those consuming 40,000 litres of water per day, and those generating 100 kg of waste every day had been defined as the BWGs.

IT parks, factories and other big organisations also came under this definition.

These BWGs should make mandatory registration under Central Pollution Control Board website. The registration should be made within 15 days from the date of the Corporation’s announcement.

The Commissioner warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract legal action. The action would include stringent enforcement action and imposing of penalty.

The BWGs need to create four colour-coded waste dumpbins at their own expenses for source segregation of wet, dry, medical and special care wastes.

The segregated waste should be stocked in the entrance of the buildings and handed over to recognised agency of the Corporation.

The BWGs which could not process wet waste on their premises should buy recognised compliance certificates under Extended Bulk Waste Generator Responsibility or link proof of compliance.

The BWGs should allow Corporation officials empowered under the Solid Waste Management Rules - 2026 to inspect their waste management infrastructure and records. Registration could be done through https://swm.cpcb.gov.in/register, the statement said.

The Corporation was providing assistance to help the BWGs register and upload the required information, the statement added.
