About 126 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹1.60 lakh were stolen from the house of a government school headmistress at Jayabharat Nagar in Tirupuvanam.
According to police, Maheshwari, who is the headmistress of Konthagai Government Middle School, lives with her son at Jayabharat Nagar along Rameswaram - Madurai National Highway.
Ms Maheshwari and her family had gone out of town on Sunday (September 13) to attend a funeral. On Monday night, unidentified burglars located a hidden spare key to the house left in the house itself, unlocked the door, and gained entry into the premises.
They forced open a wardrobe cupboard and made off with 126 sovereigns of gold ornaments and the cash. The theft came to light on Tuesday morning when Ms Maheshwari returned home. She immediately alerted Thirupuvanam police.
The police are reviewing footages from CCTV cameras installed close by to identify the culprits.
Sivaganga District Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta visited the crime scene.
