A private leather godown in Kambikollai village was gutted on Friday after fire broke out and destroyed goods worth around ₹10 lakh.

The police said that it was around 4 a.m when a few residents noticed thick smoke coming from the godown, which was run by Mohammed Wasiullah, 54, a resident of Ambur. They tried to douse the fire, but it spread to the entire godown. On being informed, firefighters reached the spot and doused it.

A case was registered by Ambur Town police. The police said that an electrical short circuit could have been the reason for the accident. A probe is under way.
