A 32-year-old man was arrested by Vaniyambadi Taluk police on Tuesday for allegedly killing his mother-in-law to steal her gold jewellery and cash.

The police identified the arrested person as Mohammed Aslam, a resident of Dharmapuri.

The police said that the victim, Sasikala, had a successful bangle business. She always used to wear gold ornaments and carry cash for business purposes.

Aslam had allegedly told the victim that her husband met with an accident and was admitted in a private hospital in Dharmapuri. Immediately, along with him, she went in a car. After a few kilometres, Aslam reportedly asked her to give her 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹15,000 cash in the handbag.

As Sasikala refused, Aslam allegedly strangulated her, and dumped her body in an abandoned quarry in Vaniyambadi, and stole her belongings. Based on an alert from residents, the police fished out Sasikala’s body from the quarry a few days ago.

CCTV footage and mobile phone signals revealed that Aslam was the key suspect. He was arrested from his hideout in the town. Aslam stole the jewellery and cash to settle his debts.
