Two persons were killed in separate accidents involving lorries in Avadi and Red Hills on Saturday, with one victim being trapped inside a mangled lorry cabin for nearly six hours before rescuers could retrieve the body.
Muthu, 26, a lorry driver from Tirunelveli, died after his lorry crashed into a stationary container truck on the Chennai Outer Ring Road near Pattabiram-Nemilichery, close to Avadi, in the early hours of Saturday.
The police said the container truck had broken down while proceeding from Poonamallee to Red Hills and was abandoned on the road. Muthu’s lorry rammed the rear of the vehicle, leaving him trapped inside the severely damaged cabin.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Avadi battled for nearly six hours using gas cutters and other equipment to extricate the driver. His body was later sent to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for a post-mortem. The Avadi Traffic Investigation Police have registered a case and launched an inquiry.
In another accident, Mohanapriya, 36, of Sholavaram, was killed when a lorry hit the two-wheeler on which she was travelling with her children near Palavayal junction. The lorry rammed the two-wheeler from behind, throwing Mohanapriya and her children, Rithika, 8, and Sanjay, 6, off the vehicle. Mohanapriya died on the spot, while the two children suffered injuries and were admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Her body was sent to the Government Stanley Hospital for a post-mortem.
The lorry driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. The Red Hills Traffic Investigation Police seized the lorry and registered a case. Both accidents led to traffic disruption on the respective stretches, with police diverting vehicles through service roads.
