The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) launched a waste segregation drive in the southern region of the city on Saturday, targeting 50,000 households in the first phase.

According to a press release, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has instructed that, in order to facilitate efficient solid waste management, steps must be taken to collect and dispose of waste by properly segregating it at the source into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary, and hazardous waste.

With the goal of strengthening scientific solid waste management across 15 GCC zones, cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns are actively being carried out.

As a continuation of these efforts, with the objective of instilling the habit of waste segregation among the public, a 40-day door-to-door awareness program titled “Segregate Waste–Save Tomorrow” was launched on Saturday in the Southern region of GCC.

As part of this initiative, GCC employees created awareness, visiting door-to-door and distributing exclusive bags for collecting non-biodegradable waste separately, handing out informational flyers, and putting up awareness posters on house walls:

In Valasaravakkam Zone, events were launched in Krishnamachari Nagar 4th Street and Ashtalakshmi Nagar 5th Street.

In Alandur Zone, source segregation awareness drive was held at Himachal Nagar Link Area.

In Adyar Zone, source segregation sensitisation programme was organised at the Integrated Child Care Centre on Muthulakshmi Salai, Thiruvanmiyur.

In Perungudi Zone, residents and workers held sensitisation programme at GCC Zone Office.

In Sholinganallur Zone, residents gathered at the Labour Housing Park for segregation awareness drive.

Under the first phase of this scheme, a target has been set to reach a total of 50,000 households across the five zones of South Chennai. A total of 10,000 households will be selected in each zone, and the scheme will be implemented in phases.

In the initial phase, special bags for waste segregation along with awareness information kits were distributed to 1,000 households per zone, covering a total of 5,000 households. The scheme will be gradually expanded to cover the remaining 45,000 households.
