In a breakthrough, the Sirwar police have picked up four suspects in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of a 21-year-old Dalit woman at Hokrani village in Sirwar taluk of Raichur district.
Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri confirmed the crackdown, stating that all four suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.
According to the police complaint, the victim was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by four individuals before her body was dumped into an open well in the village on Wednesday.
Following the complaint, the Sirwar police had registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The gruesome incident triggered widespread public outrage, with several Dalit organisations demanding immediate action against the accused.
Dalit leader Ravindra Nath Patti urged the State government to release legally mandated compensation to the victim’s family, hold an immediate peace committee meeting in the village, and provide police protection to the bereaved family for the next three months. Senior officials have also stepped in to assess the situation and ensure justice.
Inspector-General of Police, Ballari Range, P.S. Harsha, visited Hokrani village to inspect the scene of the crime and review the ongoing investigation.
Raichur Deputy Commissioner Poovitha S. met with the victim’s parents in the village, condemned the brutal crime and promised strict criminal action against the accused, along with swift safety measures and compensation clearance.
