District Collector Ranjeet Singh inspected the onion storage points in Sankarankovil taluk on Wednesday as the northeast monsoon is likely to start in mid-October.

Since the farmers take-up onion cultivation in a big way in the southern and northern parts of Tenkasi district during monsoons, specially designed storage points for onions, a highly perishable agricultural produce, are being constructed. Since these ventilated storage points should have controlled temperature and humidity to avoid loss and keep onions in good shape for 60 days during summer and up to 180 days during winter or fall, the storage point should be built carefully by conforming stipulated standards.

Hence, the Collector inspected these onion storage points as he reviewed the ongoing development works in Sankarankovil taluk on Wednesday.

Mr. Ranjeet Singh also visited the fertilizer godown of Sankarankovil Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society to verify the stocks meant for the upcoming crop season. Since this region does not have proper canal irrigation system, rain-fed farming of horticultural crops is being done in Sankarankovil takuk, for which the fertilizers have been stocked.

After physically verifying the stocks, the Collector inquired the officials about the demand for the upcoming season and the chemical fertilizer stocked in the district for this crop season and the steps taken to get sufficient quantity to meet the demand.

The Collector disbursed loan to the tune of ₹20 lakh to the beneficiary farmers at the Sankarankovil Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society.

When he visited the Sankarankovil municipality daily market, Mr. Ranjeet Singh interacted with the traders there to understand the facilities in the market that attracts a few thousand buyers everyday.

During his visit to the Vadakku Pudur Primary Health Centre, Mr. Ranjeet Singh spoke to the doctors, the patients and their attendants about the quality of medical treatment and checked the medicines stocked in the PHC.
