The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former MP Talari Rangaiah on Monday accused HRD Minister Nara Lokesh of failing to ensure basic amenities and safety for students in government schools and SC, ST and BC welfare hostels across Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at the YSRCP Central Office, Mr. Rangaiah alleged that students were being forced to live without adequate drinking water, sanitation, toilets and quality food. He questioned the government’s priorities, saying basic facilities should be ensured before making claims about investments and development.

Mr. Rangaiah cited the death of SC student Teja Harshavardhan after a school wall collapsed at Setturu, allegedly when he had gone outside because of inadequate toilet facilities.

Referring to other incidents involving student deaths and injuries, he alleged that about 650 students at the Kanekallu hostel were facing water shortages. He questioned why a borewell could not be provided at a cost of about ₹1.5 lakh.

Mr. Rangaiah demanded a comprehensive review of the HRD Department, ₹1 crore compensation and a government job for the family of the deceased student. He also sought action under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those responsible.

He said Mr. Lokesh should resign if he could not ensure the safety of students and provide them with basic amenities.
