The police have imposed restrictions on the movement of vehicles in Puducherry town to facilitate the smooth conduct of the procession carrying Vinayaka idols for immersion near Beach Road on Sunday (September 20, 2026).

The immersion of idols will take place on the beach front near the Old Court Complex on Sunday evening. Restrictions on the movement of vehicles, mainly along Kamaraj Salai, Anna Salai, S.V. Patel Salai, Ajantha Junction, Mahatma Gandhi Road, and Jawaharlal Nehru Street, will come into place from 2 p.m. on Sunday, the police said.

Idols from various places will first congregate at Saram Avvai Thidal before being taken out in a procession through Kamaraj Salai-Nehru Street-M.G. Road-Ajantha Junction-Old Distillery-Old Court Complex for immersion in the sea.

During the procession, no vehicles will be allowed on J.N. Street, M.G. Road, and S.V. Patel Salai. The plying of all types of vehicles will be completely prohibited on Kamaraj Salai between Lenin Street junction and Pattanikadai from 2 p.m. Similarly, the entry of vehicles will be restricted on Anna Salai from 3 p.m. The curbs along Kamaraj Salai and Anna Salai will be in place until the procession enters the J.N. Street area.

All vehicles, including public transport buses and light motor vehicles, coming from the Kalapet side via Muthialpet will have to take the Muthialpet Ezhaimariamman Koil Junction-Sivaji Statue-Rajiv Gandhi-Indira Gandhi Square route, to reach the new New Bus Stand area, a release here said.

“Likewise, all vehicles from the New Bus Stand area heading towards the Muthialpet-Kalapet side should take a left turn at Venkata Subba Reddiyar Statue and proceed via Nellithope-Indira Gandhi Square-Rajiv Gandhi Square-Kokkupark-Sivaji Statue. Road users are advised to cooperate with the Traffic Department by avoiding the stretches mentioned during evening hours,” the release said.
