Jipmer facilitates multi-organ donation, saves four lives

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) successfully carried out a multi-organ donation, saving four lives, after certifying the brain stem death of a 36-year-old man.

Balasubramanian of Cuddalore district was admitted to Jipmer on August 25 after sustaining injuries in a road accident. Despite emergency care and comprehensive intensive care management by the multidisciplinary team at Jipmer, he was declared brain dead on August 31.

With the consent of his family, the organs were donated. The donor’s heart, liver and kidneys were allocated through the established organ allocation system, saving the lives of four critically-ill patients, while the two donated corneas were used to restore vision in two patients in need, Jipmer said.

Jipmer has appealed to the public to discuss organ donation with their families. Deceased organ donation remains one of the most significant ways to bridge the gap between demand and availability of organs for transplantation, the institute said.
