Accusing the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) of working together to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Mayor V.V. Rajesh said he will “resist all attempts to level false charges against him.”
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that the Museum Police showed “undue haste” in registering an FIR against him over the alleged forgery of BJP councillor R Sugathan's signature in the Corporation council attendance register
"The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) has come into existence in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation earlier than I had expected. The LDF parliamentary party leader filed a complaint over alleged forgery and now a case has been registered quickly, although the police officials who visited the Corporation for initial evidence collection had realised that there is no truth to these allegations," said Mr.Rajesh.
S.P. Deepak, who filed the complaint, had alleged that the signature was forged to falsely show Mr.Sugathan's presence at meetings he actually missed while in hiding following a police case.
The forged signatures were allegedly recorded for the council meetings held on February 26, March 11 and April 27.
Mr.Rajesh said that the photographs of the council meeting on February 26, in which Mr.Sugathan can be seen, are enough proof that the allegations are false.
However, he did not produce the said photograph at the press conference.
"Mr.Sugathan had attended all these council meetings and was not in hiding as Mr.Deepak claims. He was absent only for one council meeting before the arrest," he said.
The Mayor said that he has filed another complaint to the Museum police regarding discrepancies in some documents submitted by the Opposition demanding a special council meeting.
