The Mookambika Road Byndoor Railway Station in Udupi district under Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) will be developed as a full-fledged station at a cost of around ₹100 crore, Shivamogga Member of Parliament B.Y. Raghavendra said.

Mr. Raghavendra was speaking after inspecting development works and passenger amenities at the station, which falls under his Lok Sabha constituency, on Tuesday. The development will be undertaken under the Mookambika Corridor concept, he said.

The MP noted that the station, once a mere halt station, had been upgraded at a cost of ₹2.64 crore by providing a new building, passenger reservation system, and improved platforms. Earlier, no express trains were provided commercial halts, whereas several now stop there. In the coming days, other express trains will also be provided halts at Byndoor.

Mr. Raghavendra said he had recently submitted a representation to Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to declare Byndoor as the official station for Kollur, as the pilgrim centre is just 27 km away via NH-766C.

Byndoor MLA Gururaj Gantihole and Byndoor Rail Yatri Sangha president Kunjal Venkatesh Kini were among those present.

Quoting Mr. Raghavendra’s proposal to the Ministry, Mr. Kini said the Railway Board had recently approved the station development plan at around ₹100 crore. The plan is inbuilt into the third financial restructuring of KRCL, he told The Hindu .

Besides a modern and spacious station building, Byndoor will be upgraded to a block station with three loop lines and a separate goods shed line. A block station enhances operational efficiency by enabling train crossings. Platforms at the station will get full-length shelters and refurbished flooring.

The proposal also includes provision for a coach watering facility, Mr. Kini said. At present, coach watering facilities are available at Mangaluru Junction in the south and Madgaon in the north.

Two foot overbridges with lift facilities and adequate parking space in the circulating area are among the works to be undertaken under the development plan.
