People in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam woke up to the sounds of thunderstorms as very heavy rain pounded the city on Saturday (September 12).

Many low-lying areas, inlcuding the Pandit Nehru Bus Station area, were water-logged. Traffic jams were reported from major junctions, including Benz Circle and NTR Circle, where vehicles were halted for nearly an hour. While there was no flooding in Visahapatnam, the drizzle had been steady with intermittent moderate rainfall. The rain has brought much relief to the denizens, as there was a substantial drop in temperature, after a prolonged dry and hot spell.

According to realtime data provided by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics(DES), Gunadala station of Vijayawada North received 46.5 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Vijayawada Central received 14 mm. This is the first time this season that the city received such heavy rainfall.

Nearby places, including Gannavaram, Kankipadu and other areas, part of Krishna district, also received moderate rainfall on Saturday morning.

After remaining parched for the first three months of the Southwest Monsoon season, many stations in Andhra Pradesh received widespread moderate to heavy rainfall on September 11, thanks to the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal.

According to the latest update by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at 5 a.m. on Saturday, the system remained over over South Chattisgarh and neighbourhood. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across South Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha during next 24 hours.

While multiple low pressure systems were formed in the Bay of Bengal in July and August, none of them brought widespread rainfall to the State. This time, many stations in North and South Coastal A.P. received heavy to very heavy rainfall in one day. Rayalaseema, however, did not see much rainfall activity.

According to information shared by the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), the heavy rainfall activity was centred in the two districts of West Godavari and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema. The average rainfall recorded in these two districts between 8.30 a.m. of September 11 and the corresponding time on September 12 (Saturday) stands at 46.2 mm and 36.4 mm respectively.

These mandals received the maximum amount of rainfall during the 24 hour period: Penugonda, Iragavaram, Penumantra, Achanta and Ganapavaram, all in West Godavari district, received 108.2 mm, 107 mm, 104.6 mm, 97.6 mm, 94.6 mm respectively.

Kanchili in Srikakulam received 73.8 mm, Poduru in West Godavari 65.8 mm, Kaviti in Srikakulam district received 63.4 mm, Vijayawada (Rural) 61.4 mm, P. Gannavaram in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema-60 mm, Vijayawada Central-59 mm, Makkuva in Parvathipuram Manyam 50.6 mm.
