A 35-year-old man, Shankar of Kalloorani near Tiruchuli in Virudhunagar district, was found dead in a defunct stone quarry on Saturday.

Police said following a complaint, they inspected a stone quarry in the area and recovered the body. It was sent to Aruppukottai Government Hospital for a post-mortem. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Shankar was reportedly not mentally stable. He had been missing for a few days. His parents had searched for him in the village and informed M. Reddiapatti police.

A senior police officer said the stone quarry was not functioning for the last 15 years and was owned by Ganapathi Ammal of Kalloorani.

The activists in Virudhunagar district appealed to the government to identify such defunct quarries and fence them to avoid fatal accidents. Further investigation is on.
