PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has demanded that the Union government amend the Constitution of India to ensure the continuation of reservation rights for eligible persons belonging to reserved communities who convert to other religions.
Dr. Anbumani’s demand follows the Supreme Court's ruling that reservations cannot be extended to those who have converted from one religion to another.
“In India, caste-based reservation is given based on one’s social backwardness. The social status of people belonging to the backward, most backward and scheduled castes of the Hindu religion remains the same even if they convert to another religion; there is no change in it. Similarly, not all religious conversions take place to elevate social status. In such a context, it would be right and socially just to grant reservation to a person based on caste, irrespective of religion,” he said.
