Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud claimed that the Congress government had accorded highest priority to sports development and was committed to making Telangana a leading State in the country in the field.
Participating in a discussion in the Legislative Council, Mr. Goud said the allocation of ₹1,500 crore for sports in the State budget was evidence of the government’s commitment to the sector. He said the government was also taking steps to establish a sports university in Telangana, which he claimed would be a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
Mr. Goud, who said he had himself attained a seventh Dan black belt in karate and was continuing as president of the Karate Association, said he was among those keenly interested in the development of sports. He alleged that even small amounts of ₹1 lakh and ₹2 lakh sanctioned during the previous BRS government were not released.
Referring to the contribution of sportspersons from Nizamabad, Mr. Goud said boxers Nikhat Zareen, mountaineer Malavath Purna and athlete Vennela Sandhya had brought pride to the district and the State by representing the country. He said the government’s objective was to provide better facilities and encouragement to athletes and help Telangana emerge as a national leader in sports.
