Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday (August 22, 2026) highlighted that courts must speak the language of both rule of law and economics, coining the combination as “Nyaya-nomics”.

He said courts must ensure trust, predictability and stability in the justice delivery system in order to spur economic growth.

Chief Justice Kant was speaking at the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum organised by the Bar Association of India.

“Institutions are not scaffolding that we erect around growth once it has already begun. They are its architecture. Take the architecture away, and in truth, what looks like a rising economy, is a stack of good fortune waiting for its first storm. This architecture, upheld primarily by institutions such as the justice delivery system, offers three things: Trust, Predictability, and Stability, each a direct byproduct of a studied allegiance to the Rule of Law,” the Chief Justice addressed the visiting dignitaries and participants at the forum opening.

He said consistency in jurisprudence allows an economy, including India’s own, to flourish at a growing pace.

“The term that would perfectly describe the marriage between the Rule of Law and how it permeates favourable economic conditions: ‘Nyaya-nomics’, or more simply, the economics of justice,” the CJI said.

The top judge said consistency in the interpretation of the law by courts and trust in the process reduce the cost of each transaction built upon it, thereby levelling the playing field for market forces, and in turn, making way for growth.

“To my mind, a courtroom that keeps its word quickly becomes a country the world is willing to trust with its capital,” Chief Justice Kant said.
