Three students drowned in two separate incidents in Kozhikode district on Friday (August 28, 2026). Nabeel, 19, of Palayad and Sinan, 12, of Varappurangadi, Orkatteri, drowned while swimming in the Chovva river at Maniyur near Vadakara.
The accident occurred near the Mooriyad stretch of the river. The two were part of a group of four students who had gone to the river to learn swimming. All four were reportedly washed away, but two managed to swim to safety.
In the other incident, Mohammed Shaheen, 17, drowned in a river at Manipuram in Koduvally while fishing with friends. Those accompanying him alerted residents, following which the police and a rescue squad from the Mavoor fire station launched a search. Shaheen’s body was found trapped under a fallen tree in the river.
