The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has started registration of volunteers through the upgraded Namma Chennai mobile application ahead of the Northeast monsoon, following instructions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

The initiative was aimed at enabling members of the public, NGOs, resident associations, and other organisations to work with the government and the GCC during emergencies and disaster-relief operations. Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said the system would help coordinate volunteers’ services and deploy them according to their preferred areas of participation.

Volunteers can register through the Namma Chennai application or the Corporation website. New users have to create an account using their name, mobile number, e-mail address, address and PIN code and log in using an OTP.

They can then select the ‘Volunteer Registration’ option and register as an individual, corporate entity or NGO/association. Applicants have to provide details of previous disaster experience, upload an identity document and emergency contact details, and select their area of expertise.

Volunteers can also indicate their preferred zone or choose the ‘Any Area in Chennai’ option if they are willing to work anywhere within the Corporation limits.
