The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has proposed a “Clean Coimbatore Mission” to make the city cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable.

This was one of the resolutions passed at the annual meeting of the Chamber held here on Wednesday. The Chamber said the city should implement a scientific solid waste management system with emphasis on effective source segregation, regular door-to-door collection, removal of garbage hotspots, and prevention of littering and illegal dumping.

There is also a need to improve public sanitation, ensure better maintenance of roads and public spaces, protection of waterbodies, and active participation of citizens, businesses and industries in this mission.

At the State level, the trade and industry body called for a comprehensive agri tourism policy tailored for every district, thus providing additional income to farmers and creating jobs for rural youth and women.

Tamil Nadu has diverse agricultural activities, ranging from horticulture, plantations, traditional farming practices, rural culture, local cuisine, festivals and natural resources. The Union government has recognised agri-tourism as an important component of rural tourism and has included it within its initiatives for promoting rural homestays and sustainable tourism.

The State should constitute a State agri tourism development committee, introduce a single-window, farmer-friendly registration/licensing system, and extend suitable subsidies, concessional loans, tax benefits and other incentives to eligible agri-tourism centres.

Through this policy, it should encourage farm-based accommodation, local cuisine, agricultural activities, harvesting experiences, traditional arts, handicrafts, and sale of local agricultural and value-added products.

It should also impart skill training with certificate programmes in hospitality, food safety, farm tourism, and guiding and digital marketing. The State government should promote registered agri-tourism centres through State tourism portals, digital platforms, social media, travel agencies and online booking platforms, along with agricultural festivals, farm events and rural cultural programmes.

C. Dorairaj, proprietor of Pazhamudir Nilayam, Coimbatore, was elected president of The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, on Wednesday for 2026-2028. He had served as the Chamber’s treasurer, secretary, and vice-president.
