The suspension of K. Guruprasad Rai, an Upper Primary school teacher from Kasaragod in Keralam, for including V.D. Savarkar’s name in a quiz on freedom fighters was stayed by the Kerala High Court for one month on Wednesday (August 19, 2026).

Justice Viju Abraham directed that the disciplinary proceedings against the teacher may continue. The court also issued notice to officials of the Department of General Education and the school manager who had ordered the suspension.

Mr. Rai had challenged the disciplinary proceedings initiated against him, allegedly for including the question, “who was the freedom fighter who received the maximum punishment from the Britishers?” to which he gave the answer V.D. Savarkar. He contended that he was being punished for including an answer in the quiz that was not ‘palatable to society.’
