A major theft was reported at Koorkenchery in Thrissur after burglars decamped with 55 sovereigns of gold ornaments and ₹3.5 lakh in cash from a house in the wee hours of Monday. The theft occurred at the house of Hasan Ali at around 1:30 a.m. Hasan Ali and his family were away at a hospital where his son was undergoing a surgery.
The stolen jewellery, kept in three cupboards, belonged to Hasan Ali’s wife, daughter and daughter-in-law. The thief also took ₹3.5 lakh kept in the house for repaying a bank loan.
CCTV footage captured the thief scaling the compound wall and entering the premises. However, the intruder later smashed the CCTV camera, apparently to destroy evidence. Family members who returned home in the morning found the doors open and alerted the police. Teams from the Thrissur City police and Nedupuzha police, along with fingerprint experts, inspected the house and launched an investigation.
