Google rolls out Gemini AI feature to help readers analyse their e-books

Google has rolled out a new AI feature known as Expert Intelligence that allows readers to use AI in order to get personalised insights from the e-books they bought through Google Play Books.

To make use of the feature, readers can upload eligible e-books into a Gemini Notebook. Following this, they can use AI to ask questions, understand the book, generate infographics, create audio overviews, generate quizzes, or even make action plans by uploading their own notes and ideas.

Google cited the hypothetical example of a manager brainstorming strategies in line with a management book, a woman uploading journal entries in order to benefit from the information provided in an e-book about menopause, or a family creating a meal plan inspired by a food culture book.

Expert Intelligence would allow them to apply lessons from their respective books to their own lives.

However, company-based restrictions mean that readers must buy the books they want to analyse with AI from Google Play Books. While the AI Notebook can be shared with others, they too must buy the book in order to engage with the content fully.

More readers are using AI in order to summarise or analyse the books they are reading , but these features rarely exist on one platform. Readers may need to “jailbreak” copyright protections to allow external AI tools to view their e-books. Others opt to run pirated copies through AI systems for ease. A clunkier method involves copying and pasting sections of books into AI chatbots to ask for highly specific and personalised assistance.

Google highlighted that it had developed the Expert Intelligence feature in collaboration with authors and publishers, to both help readers and encourage sales.

“Expert Intelligence launches today with more than 100,000 books from major publishers, including Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media, and Penguin Random House. We’ve also collaborated closely with more than 15 bestselling authors — including Steven Pinker, Michael Pollan, and Jennifer Wallace — to curate special Featured Notebooks that supplement their books with additional sources and engaging artifacts that let readers dive deeper into the author’s work,” stated the company in a blog post.
