The Tamil Nadu government has declared a local holiday across Madurai district on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in connection with the consecration of Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
According to Government Order issued on September 12, the holiday applies to all State government offices and educational institutions within the Madurai district limits. To compensate for the day off, Saturday, September 26, 2026, will be a full working day.
Because the holiday has not been declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the District Treasury and sub-treasuries will operate with a minimal staff to handle urgent financial transactions.
Authorities stated that the local holiday was announced to ensure public convenience and robust security arrangements, as hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the State and country are expected to converge in Madurai for the grand consecration.
