Pizza Hut Japan creates moon-viewing sukiyaki chrysanthemum pizza for tsukimi season

Full moon inspires pizzas with a whole lot to love .

It was a great day in the history of Japanese food culture when someone cracked an egg into a bowl of noodles and said “Hey, that looks like a full moon!” as it cooked in the heat of the broth.

Thus was born tsukimi (“moon-viewing”) noodles, and because historical milestones can serve as inspiration for great minds of the future, in time Japanese restaurants began to apply the tsukimi concept to hamburgers, and now we have tsukimi pizza too.

With autumn being the traditional time for moon-viewing parties in Japan, Pizza Hut Japan is baking up multiple types of tsukimi pizza .

But it wouldn’t make sense to simply put an egg on top of a pie and call it tsukimi, since there’s already a name for pizza with egg, Bismarck pizza, which is something you can find at lots of pizzerias and Italian restaurants in Japan.

So instead, Pizza Hut Japan is giving its tsukimi pizzas additional doses of Japanese appeal, starting with the Sukiyaki Tsukimi Pizza .

This pizza is topped with strips of sukiyaki beef , seasoned with the same sweetly savory sauce used for sukiyaki hot pot.

They’re accompanied by a melty egg sauce , and also shungiku, edible chrysanthemum leaves , a high-class green that’s also a common sukiyaki ingredient.

Together, they give you a mix of meaty, sweet, creamy, and slightly bitter notes, for a complex but satisfying and hearty pizza.

Arriving alongside the Sukiyaki Tsukimi Pizza is the Terimayo Tsukimi Pizza .

That abbreviation is for “teriyaki mayonnaise,” as both are viable flavor choices in Japan’s casual pizza sphere.

The Terimayo Tsukimi features the same egg sauce as its sukiyaki menu-mate, but forgoes the chrysanthemum leaves and goes with teriyaki chicken instead of beef for its protein.
