Japan plans to examine use of humanoid robots in defense — news agency

TOKYO, September 22. /TASS/. The Japanese government intends to explore the possibility of using humanoid robots for defense purposes, the Kyodo News agency reported.

According to its sources in the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the plan involves using "physical AI" technology, which enables robots equipped with artificial intelligence to function autonomously.

Authorities plan to use such robots to perform logistical tasks for the country’s Self-Defense Forces - such as guarding bases, transporting cargo, and other support functions. Given the current shortage of personnel in the Self-Defense Forces, the goal is to reduce the need for human resources through the introduction of AI and unmanned systems.

However, the use of humanoid robots directly in combat operations is not currently being considered. Japan’s ruling party points to the lack of an international legal framework and the risks associated with potential errors in a robot’s ability to distinguish between combatants and civilians.

At the same time, the possibility of using such robots in reconnaissance and rescue operations is being examined for the future. According to Kyodo, in about 20 years, the size of the conscript contingent for the Self-Defense Forces will decline by about 30%. Therefore, the Defense Ministry expects that humanoid robots will be "an effective tool to replace or complement operations undertaken by a limited number of personnel."

The government plans to revise key documents on defense and security at the end of the year, regarding the broader use of AI as a key to bolstering the country's defense capabilities, the agency reported.
