The Tankman’s Day was established by a Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet in 1946, which emphasized not only the particularly important role of tank and mechanized troops in the Great Patriotic War, but also the contributions of the tank builders to equipping the armed forces with armoured vehicles. At that point in time, victorious tankmen and tank builders were honoured by the first salutes and pedestalling Victory tanks T-34 and IS in Nizhny Tagil, Omsk and Chelyabinsk.
