US, Denmark, Greenland support NATO activities expansion in Arctic

WASHINGTON, September 22. /TASS/. The United States, Denmark and Greenland have called for expansion of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) activities, including intelligence, in the Arctic.

"The Parties support a stronger NATO engagement in the Arctic, including as regards planning, presence, exercises, and joint intelligence gathering," the new Greenland security agreement released by the White House says. This trilateral document was signed on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York by US President Donald Trump, as well as the Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The agreement also says that the US request "to establish unmanned military installations in Greenland" will be considered under an accelerated procedure.

Earlier, Trump said that the US and Denmark had reached an agreement on Washington taking control of Greenland’s security. He said that the US would immediately begin to increase its military presence on the Arctic island. Prior to that, Frederiksen categorically rejected the US president’s intention to gain control over the island. Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland should be annexed to ensure security. Even during his first term, he proposed buying the island, and in 2025, he said it could be annexed, threatening Copenhagen with trade duties if it refused. Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous region.
