Further US sanctions would complicate Ukraine peace efforts – Kremlin

The legislation approved by Congress is an “unfriendly” move, according to presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov Additional US sanctions against Russia would make it more difficult to reach a settlement of the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

The US House of Representatives passed the legislation on Wednesday, following Senate approval last month, sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

The bill allows Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas.

Commenting on the measure on Thursday, Peskov described it as an “unfriendly” move and said that Moscow was closely following its progress.

“Of course, the introduction of any additional sanctions by the US will definitely complicate efforts to find a peaceful settlement in Ukraine,” he told reporters.

The legislation, named after the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, had remained stalled for months as Trump pursued diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict.

Graham, a vocal supporter of Kiev, had championed tougher sanctions against Russia.

Diplomatic contacts resumed earlier this month, when White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow and Kiev.

The bill also targets Russia’s energy and defense sectors and its so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers allegedly used to evade sanctions.

Its tariff provisions target major buyers of Russian energy, including China and India.

New Delhi said on Thursday that it was monitoring developments and would take “all necessary measures” to protect its economic interests and energy security.

India has also warned the US that tariffs imposed over purchases of Russian oil could affect bilateral ties.

The measure faced opposition from many House Democrats, who argued that it could raise costs for Americans.
